Issue #20494: Quality Assurance - Punish Timmy

This might be the most broken Quest in the game, frankly.

"I'm having a really strange bug. I went through this and had no idea where Timmy was or how to punish him, so I just finished clearing the factory and left. Now I go to any</em> dungeon and I hear a voice in the background demanding "Punish the child!" "The child needs discipline!" I think I may be losing my mind. Anyone else experience this or know of a fix? I tried going back to General Atomics and turning the radio on and off but the voice won't go away...

Make. It. Stop!!!!"

"Here are some things I have discovered:

1) If you leave the room before turning off the radio, it seems to permanently break it.

2) If you turn off the radio before the instructions to do so, it seems to permanently break it.

3) Once it is permanently broken, you will randomly hear the "punish the child" over speakers, no matter where you go."

Video: https://youtu.be/4wH30qk70oM

Another player filmed himself turning off the radio, to no effect.

Edit: Holy hell. There's another bug in General Atomics Factory, and it's BAD. Watch the end of that video I linked. Near the radioactive barrels, there is a metal door you can open that leads to... nothing. Empty map space that's glitched. If you jump into it, you fall for a while before being teleported back to the map's entrance.

I'm having the same problem and am attaching a save to see if anything can be determined from it.

I'd like to add that this bug is REALLY annoying. That voice just never shuts up!

With the Automatron DLC sending you to the affected location too there's a good chance that newer player to F4 will leave that place without completing that unmarked quest, forever limiting them from either never returning to do the quest, or hearing that voice in other dungeons forever.

I investigated this a little, and I can't reproduce the part about hearing the voice in other dungeons (at least when I went through the common scenario of clearing the "boss room" of General Atomics Factory, without going into the testing area to officially start the unmarked quest). Also, I'm not so sure about breaking the quest by turning off the radio before the instructions to do so - in playthroughs where I do this quest before leaving, I usually turn off the radio almost as soon as I can enter the first test chamber, and that seems to work fine.

However, I can confirm that leaving the factory without doing the quest puts it in an uncompletable state - "sqs DN050" shows that stage 45 was set, but none of the other stages have been completed. I believe this is caused by DN050SafetyTriggerScript, which has an OnTriggerLeave function, presumably to tell if the "dangerous" items in chamber 3 (childproofing) have been taken out of the room. However, leaving the building may also call this function for the items, causing it to set stage 45, since there are no safeguards to make sure that 1. the player is still in the building and 2. the quest has actually been started.

I don't have the skills to make the quest completable in a game where it's already broken, but here's a tiny mod that adds some safeguards to the voice lines, which will hopefully prevent them from playing in other dungeons, and to DN050SafetyTriggerScript, so that in a game where one hasn't yet entered General Atomics Factory, one can safely leave and come back later to do this unmarked quest. I tested to make sure my safeguards didn't prevent completion of the quest, but since I haven't been hearing the voice in other dungeons even without it, I can't be sure whether that safeguard really works.

It seems I spoke too soon about not having the skills to fix this further - with a little more investigation, and some changes to the conditions in the scenes and scripts to check for specific stages being done instead of just GetStage, the new attachment makes it possible to finish the quest even if you've left the building and come back before installing, albeit with a minor issue in the third chamber - in this case, the voiceover will say you've already childproofed the room, but you'll still get to the end and unlock the safe with the fusion cores.
