Issue #28861: Alduin's Wall bug - Delphine stuck and won't light the braziers (And how to fix it!!)
The famous Alduin's Wall bug where Delphine and Esbern won't move, with tons and tons of people asking for help on the internet and none ever got an answer.
This is what happens: When Delphine and Esbern (and the player) enters the Sky Haven Temple, Esbern goes ahead and says his lines about the akaviri arts, etc, while Delphine is stuck at the entrance, not moving and not doing anything (but she still says her lines). Esbern gets to the wall, but since Delphine didn't move and lighted the braziers on the way, he won't keep going and the quest is stuck forever unless you skip it on the console. The main point here is lighting the braziers, for both Esbern (the one right at the wall), and Delhpine (the 4 on the way), without it the quest won't progress. But I found a solution! And I would love it to be incorporated on the pacth to play automatically without me having to type it in the console everytime. To fix this both Delphine and Esbern must to be equipped with a torch at the entrance of the temple (I found giving them the torch right at the entrace, as soon as the loading screen finishes works best, but I think giving them a torch right before entering it works too (like when that huge stone head lifts after the blood seal is activated). For that I click on them both and type on the console "equipitem 0001d4ec 1 left", that forces them to get a torch and equip it, and so the quests progresses as it should! I know it doesn't happen to all people, but it's a game breaking bug, and if you use mods that somehow messes with torches, then this likely happens and the main quest is forever bugged without finishing it with the console command (but it happens on vanilla too, I tested it on both vanilla and modded save). I hope this helps a lot of people! |
Esbern is not involved in the AI package that handles lighting the braziers, that's only for Delphine to do. So adding it to Esbern accomplishes nothing other than giving him something to screw up his own routines with.
There is also no obvious requirement in any of the packages or scripts that have a dependency on the torch for this, but it's possible the associated animation files might. Which means this should be a fairly easy fix to make by adding a script fragment to the entry scene to force Delphine to equip her torch. Which she will cycle out later when she no longer needs it.
