Issue #28877: The Man Who Cried Wolf Cave Pit

 
Hello!

Playing through a pretty basic version of Skyrim when I got to the "The Man Who Cried Wolf" quest. I accepted the quest, had no issues there, everything was normal, then when I went to the cave the only thing I encountered was bandits. When I got to the area in which I'm supposed to drop down into the pit, the pit is covered up with ice, and I can't advance any further.

I tried all the usual tricks to get around this. I loaded earlier saves from weeks and more back, fast travelled away and waited, played the game for a long time before coming back to the cave, attempted to clip through the ground after a desperate YouTube binge, and nothing has changed. The bandits are dead, none of the special magical enemies spawn, and the pit is covered up with ice.

I tried installing the Unofficial Skrim Special Edition Patch to see if that would fix it, and put it first on my load order, trying all of the usual bug glitch get-arounds again just to be sure, but it's still not working. Without completing this quest it's very difficult to continue on with the game and I'm at a stand-still.

Please help!

This is something that has been reported before (see Issue #22051). We have never been able to reproduce it on the PC version of the game.

Thank you for referencing me and answering!

I found an odd loop-hole that might help others get through the quest.

If the ice on the floor won't go away, players can install a mod for 5x jump, find the Wolfskull Cave Ruins exit door on a ledge at the start of the cave, jump up and enter through the exit.

All of the people you're required to kill are in the cave still, and you can complete the quest that way!
