Resolution: Can't Fix - Engine Issue

Issue #28942: Game crashes or hangs northeast of Goodneighbour

I recently came back to Fallout 4 after a lengthy absence, but on my last two playthroughs I've encountered frequent crashes and freezes in the area roughly northeast of Goodneighbour. The affected area is large enough that I can't reach the Old North Church, making it impossible to finish the game.

To be more specific - on the second playthrough I got to the Old Corner Bookstore, from which I was able to shoot the raiders at Haymarket Mall. But when I tried to loot their bodies, four out of five times the game would freeze or crash. The fifth time I moved on to Faneuil Hall, only to have the game freeze while fighting the Super Mutants there. I also tried ignoring Haymarket Mall and going straight to Faneuil Hall a couple of times with similar results.

I have of course successfully navigated this area plenty of times on previous playthroughs; I'm not clear what's changed. The only mods I have installed other than the Unofficial Patch are one which fixes the requirements to build crafting station and one which restores XP for Sandman kills, neither of which seem likely to be relevant.

I haven't experienced any crashing in that area in my game with the PC version of the game. There is some lagging (low fps rates), but that's relatively typical of most crowed areas in downtown Boston.

Interesting. Any guesses what might be different in my case? Is it possible an uninstall and reinstall might help?

It's possible that could help, but the most likely cause is one of your other mods if this is a persistent problem in that area. Random crashes are just something that happen periodically in the game that we have zero control over. Crashes that are reproducible only on your game are likely caused by something else on your end. Regardless, there's nothing we can do about either on our end, especially if we cannot reproduce the issue.

Yeah, I'm used to random crashes, but this is more consistent than that.

I don't suppose any of the patch team have an XBox One to verify whether the problem is specific to that platform rather than just my game?

Finally, I did reinstall, and I can now clear Haymarket Mall with only occasional stutters, but the game still freezes up while fighting the super mutants outside Faneuil Hall, So I don't know if the affected area has gotten smaller or what. I'll try with my other two mods disabled next to see if that makes a difference.

I had time before work to try twice with my other two mods disabled, and both times the game hung outside Faneuil Hall. So it doesn't appear the other mods are the problem.

(Also, I left my various Creation Club purchases uninstalled after reinstalling the game, to rule them out as potential problems. That didn't help.)

I'd like to provide a saved game in case that's useful, but I can't figure out how to get a saved game from my console to a USB stick. Googling the issue hasn't been productive. Is there a tutorial somewhere?

Update: with some more experimentation, I discovered I could in fact reach the Old North Church despite the bug, by looping around to the Shamrock Taphouse and heading north.

But Faneuil Hall still seems to be unreachable from either side, rendering The Gilded Grasshopper and the occasional randomly generated quest uncompletable.

I finally got around to testing this on Series X, and I was able to enter and leave Faneuil Hall without so much as a stutter. So it seems likely the problem was due to the hardware being overtaxed in that area. No idea whether that necessarily means it's unfixable.

As a side note, I'd encountered similar crashes at various places on The Island (from the Far Harbour expansion), which I'd assumed were similar in cause. But those crashes happen just as often on Series X as they did on Xbox One. So I'll need to put in a separate bug report for that.

It isn't going to be possible for us to fix crashes that are hardware or game engine related. The only situation in which they can be addressed is when they can be traced to something very specific, like a badly written quest script or other game data that is accessible through the Creation Kit. Consistent crashing in certain areas is often indicative of a corrupted game save or a bad edit in a mod you're using. Due to various flaws in the game's engine design, it's unfortunately easier than one might think for a game save to gradually become corrupted over time too and there's not a whole lot that can be done to avoid it in some cases.

Regarding transferring saves from an XBox console to PC goes, it can't be done properly. ASs I understand it, the saves are coded differently and wouldn't be something we could use even if you somehow managed to find a way to get them to your PC.

This should have been closed 2 years ago when it was determined to be either a hardware or platform issue that can't be fixed in the patch.
