Issue #32355: Constant crash when becoming Morthal Thane if Alva is left alive (Laid To Rest quest)

I encountered a severe bug that can be of interest for the team behind USSEP ...
Notably as USSEP has already done some bug fixing for the following quest.

Skyrim SE 1.6x (latest SE-AE)
Where/Quests : Morthal - becoming Thane versus Laid To Rest quest

The severe bug (assured crash when becoming Thane) was caused by not killing Alva during the quest Laid To Rest.

CONTEXT : Alva was left alive in the cave (Movarth's Lair), and so Hroggar remained defensive/cowering in Alva's house and, once I became thane, the game would constantly crash within a minute. The rest of the cave (lair) had previously been cleared (vampire lord slain, etc.).

Amateur theory : Hroggar is scripted to appear in the Hall after Alva is killed (he thanks you if you speak to him), but this does not occur if Alva is left alive in the cave, and this may be the cause of the logical bug.

DETAILS :
- Alva was defeated, but still alive, and the cave will be marked as cleared, but going back to kill Alva will debug this issue.

- Entering with a companion, the spiders were dead (normal) but game crashed. BUT when entering alone and using an autosave, spiders are alive and the vampire lord and other enemies were found in the cave and re-slain anew.

- USSEP does modify Hroggar's quest behavior and also patches Alva's behavior (see below).

PAST USSEP FIX (might, possibly, be related) :
  • Vanilla : If she is not killed in Movarth's Lair at the end of Laid to Rest, she will be found back in Morthal a few days later. Attacking her is considered a crime at this point.
  • Unofficial Skyrim Patch 2.0.9 : she will no longer return to Morthal once she goes to Movarth's Lair.

SAVE FILE :
a) The save is in front of Morthal Hall : enter and become Thane. Crash within a minute.
b) Or, instead go to Movarth's Lair, clear the area of Alva and enemies (which I had already killed). Hroggar will then greet me in Hall, I become Thane, with no crashes.

Addendum : in terms of the plug-ins I use, only USSEP modifies Hroggar and Alva.
Of course, scripts from other mods can still have an impact, like Immersive Citizens and Nether's Follower Framework.

I've tested this on my own freash save as well as with the one you provided. Frankly I think it's a miracle your save loaded into my testbed at all, but either way, the result was still the same. No crash. Became Thane and had no issues with Alva.

Going to have to assume the issue was the result of a conflict with one of the many mods your save reports as masters.
