Also, if you did talk to Rufus and got the quest, Buddy has "I've sold you to Rufus Rubins in Goodneighbor" in his dialog tree when Complete Quest at 520 is set. I haven't checked to see if this is in his tree when you don't talk to Rufus and take him, but I'll do that next round. Seems like everything is in place to handle this quest the right way if you wanted to take it on.
That quest holds all of Rufus's dialogue. ALL of it. Including his lines as a merchant. Buddy's post-quest lines too, btw. If you stop the quest, they both remain completely silent for the rest of the game, and this cannot be undone.
