Guns are complex objects in Fallout 4 due to the modding system building them out of multiple individual components. There are four core components that a variety of guns in the game are built off of, which are simply dummy objects that provide overly large collision. Those components are:
Meshes/Weapons/HuntingRifle/HuntingRifleDummyParent.nif
Meshes/Weapons/LaserMusket/LaserMusketDummyReceiver.nif
Meshes/Weapons/LaserWeapons/LaserWeaponDummyReceiver.nif
Meshes/Weapons/Plasma/DummyReceiver.nif
The usage of the dummy receivers for the laser muskets, laser weapons, and plasma weapons is fairly self evident. That group affects all plasma guns, all laser muskets, and both the "Laser X" and "Institute laser X" groups of laser weapons. The hunting rifle is less straightforward, since the playable hunting rifle uses an appropriate receiver and the only hunting rifles that use the model listed above are non-playable weapons. However, the Lever-Action Rifle added by far harbor uses that dummy object as its core.
The individual components of these guns all have their own collision with appropriate materials set. However, these dummy objects have oversized collision boxes with a generic material set. The impact of this is twofold - first, the guns will float and collide with objects without visibly touching them. Second, they will frequently produce the wrong sound when dropped. I've attached screenshots demonstrating both their collision boxes and the impact they have on placement.
I have shared a mod that removes the collision from those dummy models,
found here. You are free to include that mod in the unofficial patch, or to recreate or ignore as you please.
