Issue #34038: Makeshift Weapons Pack Baseball Launcher VATS - ammo calculation errors, ammo dupe exploit

 
The Baseball Launcher, new in the Next Gen Update (25 Apr 2024), part of the Makeshift Weapons Pack (former Creation Club item), and as of the Next Gen update now bundled into the base game, exhibits the following errors:

  1. Dupe exploit where roughly 160% excess ammo is dropped (vs ammo expended from the magazine) when firing in VATS. As the ammo is reusable, this is an infinite ammo exploit.
  2. incorrectly reports insufficient ammo to stack another attack when that is not the case
  3. ncorrectly shows reloads on the AP bar that will not and do not happen
  4. generally the VATS AP bar is talking total nonsense with this weapon

The ammo dupe exploit is easily noticed and is being widely reported on social media posts and videos. The VATS reporting errors are perhaps less obvious and are much less reported or perhaps unreported.

The root cause is that the mod author has incorrectly added the keyword VATSWeaponLongBurst to the base weapon item ccSBJFO4003_BaseballLauncher. This keyword tells VATS that the weapon will fire ten round bursts. The baseball launcher fires 3 round busts. This mismatch is what causes the VATS display errors in the AP bar and incorrect messages about insufficient ammo to stack another attack. Probably through an interaction with a script that drops the re-useable modified baseballs, it is also responsible for the duping of ~60% more baseballs than were fired.

I have published a patch to Bethesda.net as part of a wider-ranging mod that attempts to rebalance the Makeshift Weapons Pack (now part of the base game). I will write a small patch just for this issue and attach it shortly.

Steps to reproduce

1. Dupe exploit.

Go to Home Plate and scrap it so the floor area is clear. Bring a companion. Remove modified baseballs from inventory until a small number remain eg 9 (one magazine full). Dismiss the companion (so they are targetable in VATS) and immediately target them in VATS. Fire a fixed quantity of modified baseballs (eg 9). Count the baseballs on the floor as you pick them up. There will be around 15.

2. Ammo count errors

Attempt to stack 3 3rd bursts in VATS from a full 9 round magazine, with no spare ammo in inventory The VATS AP bar will show spurious reloads. An error message will appear saying you have insufficient ammunition to stack the second or third attack.
