Issue #8588: Dragons have pixelated wings

As shown in this screenshot http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/630730982033638753/528448C12884336B7678C051B430D233D934C678/
dragons wings, especially when playing without any Anti-Aliasing, have this "minecraftish" look.
Even if not particularly noticeable while playing, it kind of ruin the pleasure to admire the dragon "statues" that sometime the loading screens show.

Now I think the problem is caused by these low quality texture called:

translucentwings.dds
translucentwings_earth.dds
translucentwings_snow.dds.
translucentwings_boss.dds
translucentwings_ohdaviing.dds

found inside the \textures\actors\dragon folder.

Now, even if the last two files are more than double the size of the previous ones, they still have the same problem in game.

The best way to check what I am saying is to mod the loadcreens with dragons, especially the frost dragon and ohdaviing ones, and checking the "Display on main screen" box, so you wont have to wait for the random chance of them showing.

I'm giving you all this "direction" not because I doubt of your skills, but because I noticed that this bug wont be visible through nifskope or creation kit alike...

In any case, thanks for your time.

Some additional notes:

- this bug seems to be noticeable mostly when the dragon dies or when you look at the internal part of the wings from certain angles. It also appear to effect the frost dragon more than on the other kinds.

This appears to be some kind of shader issue, but I haven't looked into it for very long. I believe it's due to the backlighting/translucency shader.

I can make it pop up, and then barely move the mouse and it's gone again.

By the looks of it, texture resolution has little to do with it. I'll have to look into the NIFs and such.

OK, it seems that the shader (likely the backlighting one) disables any kind of texture filtering at certain angles. I doubled the width and height of the frost dragon "translucentwings" texture, and then doubled it again. The first time it was still kind of noticeable, and seemed to pop up more often. The second time I doubled the texture, it took me forever to see the pixelation, but I also think it actually showed up less.

So the size of the pixels does depend on texture resolution.

Of these:

translucentwings.dds
translucentwings_earth.dds
translucentwings_snow.dds.
translucentwings_boss.dds
translucentwings_ohdaviing.dds

the "snow" and "earth" textures are half the size, hence they show up more noticeably. This is 86KB vs 171KB. I could double just the two, or quadruple the two and double the rest so they are all larger, and thus show the pixelation less.

I may also quickly test what keeping the original size but using an uncompressed texture does.

Oh, sorry for spamming, I'm being silly, the double size means some have alpha channels, some don't. It's possible the lack of an alpha channel is causing the pixelation, even if it's just white.

After: http://i.imgur.com/q4Igr0q.jpg (worst I could make it look)
After: http://i.imgur.com/4hpMKTT.jpg (almost unnoticeable)

These are 1366KB, up from 171KB/86KB. There seems to be no need for an alpha channel. The only thing I could do to get these looking better was higher res.

Those are so much better. Thanks.

Fixed for USKP 1.2.7. (Cue the anti-visual fixes crowd)
